KiwiJam Edwin Fox Children's Workshops
Hello, we are Kristina Jensen and Paul Candlish, creators of Kiwi Jam, a performing musical theatre duo who will be running a series of free 'playshops' for the Picton Maritime Festival in January 2020. Our aim is to form a pop-up company (up to 20 children aged 5-12) who will create a performance together that focuses on the passage of early settlers to New Zealand on sailing ships, in particular, the Edwin Fox, which resides here in Picton.
Our co-created musical theatre piece will be based on personal stories from those who travelled to NZ on the Edwin Fox as well as studying sailor's sea shanties. Ukeleles, guitars and percussion instruments will be available at the 'playshops' so that the group can learn to play and compose tunes together.
The 'playshops' will run over three sessions, for 1 ½-2 hours each (starting at 10AM) on the Wednesday 20th, Thursday 21st and Friday 22nd January 2021 before the festival and will be held at the Edwin Fox Museum. We hope to attract young people who are already involved in music and drama at their schools but our 'playshops' are not necessarily limited to this group.
The 20-30 minute drama created by the group will be performed on the main stage at the Picton Maritime Festival on Saturday 23rd January 2021.
To register your child please go to our Contact page and enter your details in the contact us form. Many thanks.

The Wellington Sea Shanty Society
New Zealand's Most 'Sea Worthy' Shanty Group™ have been belting out traditional sea songs from Aotearoa, France, Spain, the UK and more, since 2012. Sailors and landlubbers from across the country have been battered by the rousing chorus of this two-man tempest of pure shanty. The W.S.S.S believe that 'a shanty shared is a shanty savoured', so they pass out shanty song sheets to one and all so people can sing along,
The W.S.S.S comprise Vorn Dont le Père Etait Marin, from the indie pop band Vorn, and Lake Davineer, from the electro pop band Lake South. Vorn is on squeeze box duties, while Lake strums the git-fiddle. Rousing harmonies and raucous foot-stomping abound! We also perform as a 4 piece with drums and violin.

KiwiJam
Musical storytelling duo, KiwiJam, will be running a series of three ‘playshops’ for a group of young people in the three days prior to the Picton Maritime festival. The focus of this ‘pop up theatre’ event will be the sailing journeys undertaken by settlers coming to New Zealand on board the sailing ship, Edwin Fox.
The Edwin Fox is a centrepiece of the maritime history of New Zealand, being the 9th oldest surviving wooden sailing ship in the world and the only example of a merchantman. She was fitted out to carry settlers in 1872 and made 4 trips to New Zealand, bringing a total of 751 people. The hull of the Edwin Fox resides on the Picton foreshore in a purpose built shelter and is a poignant reminder of the technology of the past.
Kristina Jensen and Paul Candlish, creators of KiwiJam, will be using real-life accounts from passengers of that time, sea shanties and period costumes to co-create a drama with the children outlining aspects of the voyages made in the 1870s. This will culminate in a performance on the main stage at the festival.
‘An ocean voyage like this was totally outside most of the passengers’ sphere of experience. These were rural country folk, going totally into the unknown. They were at sea for over three months battling storms, diverse temperatures and being wet sometimes for days,’ says Paul Candlish, sailor, musician and musical instrument maker. ‘We think nothing of getting on a plane to fly overseas these days but these people were putting their total faith in a vessel with no motor, no GPS, natural fibre ropes sails and rigging, limited water supplies, no safety gear and the no weather forecasts. We really have no idea what it was like.’
The couple have been playing and teaching music and running their signature ‘playshops’ for 30 years, beginning in the early nineties in Auckland when they created ‘Out Of Time’ with well-known storyteller and author, Tanya Batt. U*ME*US was then formed in 1995 with Levity Beet, storyteller, musician and instrument maker from Golden Bay, touring kindergartens and schools all over New Zealand for five years. KiwiJam is their current project, where they combine improvisational skills, group musical creativity and dramatic elements to invite everyone to have a go.
The workshop is aimed at 5 - 11 year old children and is on a first come first served basis. To register for the workshop please e-mail pictonmf2005@gmail.com with the attendees name and age,
